Shown here is a cross section of a nerve with a self-sizing spiral cuff that had been implanted in an experimental animal for seven months. Within the cuff is the nerve and the inner tissue capsule. Outside the cuff is the outer tissue capsule. Between these two tissue layers is the electrode with two wraps of the spiral cuff. Note, the edge of the lamination layer on the inner wrap has been trimmed to relive the curling tension at the edge.
This is a histological section of the implanted nerve and associated encapsulation. And this is longitudinal section of the nerve and capsule. Note, the ghost of the two cuff wraps.
